San Mei Bares All in Pivotal New EP 'Cry'

"...some of her most personal and relatable songwriting yet. Finally settling squarely on a dream pop

indebted sound, Cry sees Hamilton coming into her own as a musician and producer, and with her

unparalleled work ethic, there’s not much to get in her way." - Audiofemme

Riding high after a mammoth 2019, Australia’s multi-talented break-through artist San Mei (Emily Hamilton) today unveils her new EP ‘Cry’. Premiering with AudioFemme, ‘Cry’ is the title track from San Mei’s guitar-ridden, dreamy-pop EP, which also features singles ‘Something Good’, ‘Love In The Dark’, and her most recent self-produced ballad ‘Cherry Days’.

Taking you on a journey of self-reflection seen through the graceful eyes of San Mei, ‘Cry’ is a body of work that will urge you to shine a light on some uneasy topics, yet leave you feeling utterly empowered. San Mei unpacks the meaning of the lead single - “I wrote Cry when I realised it had gotten to the middle of the year already, and time was flying like crazy. It made me think, I hadn't really been paying attention to what was happening around me in the present, and only been thinking about the future, wishing time would hurry up so I could get to that next thing. I think when we're young, we lament all the things we don't have, or how we're not where we want to be yet. We could actually end up wishing our time and youth away. This song is a reminder to myself to stop, breathe and appreciate this stage of my life and everything it has to offer.”

Having already gained triple j support across multiple tracks, a tick of approval and on-air spin from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, as well as production assistance from Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Ali Barter, Alex Lahey), and Scott Horscroft (Oh Mercy, Silverchair, Last Dinosaurs, The Presets), the ‘Cry’ EP is no doubt another pivotal step forward for the ever-promising San Mei movement.

In 2019, San Mei played a staggering 45 local and international shows, including her debut national ‘Something Good’ headline tour, nine shows in six days at SXSW 2019, national support performances for the likes of K.Flay, Ali Barter, Kingswood, G. Flip, and Jack River, and festival slots at This That, Yours & Owls, plus more.

San Mei sparked the interest of tastemakers around the world in 2018 with her breakthrough single ‘Wonder’, which hit #1 on the Hype Machine chart, got added to triple j and cemented her in the most played unsigned artists, before going on to showcase at BIGSOUND Festival 2018. The excitement continued into 2019 when she was hand-picked by triple j Unearthed to make her debut major festival appearance at the iconic Falls Festival, ahead of signing to Australian label etcetc, and being announced to showcase at SXSW 2020 for a consecutive year.
