San Mei Delivers Uplifting New Single 'Cherry Days' Before Heading to SXSW 2020
Taking the stage at SXSW 2020 next month for a second consecutive year, an EP just around the corner, and a guitar-ridden, dreamy-pop single ‘Cherry Days’ out today, it’s all happening for the breakthrough Australian artist San Mei.
Premiering on triple j’s Home & Hosed, ‘Cherry Days’ evolved from an American road-trip through the desert with her partner, and is an uplifting reminder about the importance of appreciating the moments in between. San Mei elaborates, “I was thinking, we always have so much to do, work towards, strive for; we’re always chasing something… and I thought how nice it was in that particular moment that for once, we had nothing to do and nowhere to be. It made me think that it’s okay to just enjoy ourselves for the sake of it every now and then, because life can be hard and it's the sweet, easy moments that keep us going.”
‘Cherry Days’ sees San Mei jumping behind the desk for the first time on producing duties with longtime studio drummer and collaborator Michael McCartney on board for engineering. A move inspired by wanting to be more in control of seeing her ideas right through to completion. “I had the chance to put on my producer hat and really take the lead in the recording process. It was a really good challenge for me, pulling apart the song, having to make hard decisions for the best outcome, and making sure the song came out at a level I was happy with. I recorded it with the help of my friend Michael McCartney, whose beautiful drumming you've heard on my recordings. He's a really gifted musician and artist and I think we made a really good team and came up with something special,” explains San Mei.
Following the success of her most recent single ‘Hard To Face’, which gained a triple j tick of approval with a spot playlist addition, and premiere on Good Nights, ‘Cherry Days’ is another step toward the highly anticipated release of San Mei’s EP titled ‘Cry’ on March 20 in alignment with SXSW 2020.
Having played a staggering 45 shows in 2019, including her debut national ‘Something Good’ headline tour, as well as nine shows in six days at SXSW 2019, national support performances for the likes of K.Flay, Ali Barter, Kingswood, G. Flip, and Jack River, and festival slots at This That, Yours & Owls, plus more, San Mei has been cementing a name for herself in both the local and international music scene.
San Mei sparked the interest of tastemakers around the world in 2018 with her breakthrough single ‘Wonder’, which hit #1 on the Hype Machine chart, got added to triple j and cemented her in the most played unsigned artists, before going on to showcase at BIGSOUND Festival 2018. The excitement continued into 2019 when she was hand-picked by triple j Unearthed to make her debut major festival appearance at the iconic Falls Festival, ahead of signing to Australian label etcetc.
