“As teenagers we would be excited to read bands’ playlists…So we’ve really taken to heart doing this compilation for Kitsune…Today you can get anything you like but way back it could take up to three years to lay your hands on a rare track.” –Laurent Brancowitz
Kitsuné have given free reins to the boys from Phoenix for an unlikely yet amazing compilation of rare tracks that have changed their lives. Following in the footsteps of Digitalism, Phoenix’s Thomas Mars and Laurent Brancowitz carefully selected 18 tracks to make this the most sentimental and melodic record ever released on Kitsuné (better known for its electro-oriented Kitsuné Maison compilation and for artists like Digitalism, Cazals and autoKratz).
One of the most important French bands of recent times, Phoenix have gathered, in their own words, “little treasures that have had this huge impact and amazed us”. Known for three original albums of flawless indie-pop concotions that include the hits If I Ever Feel Better, Too Young, Everything is Everything, Run Run Run, Long Distance Call and Napoleon Says, their songs were also featured on the iconic Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette soundtracks.
For Tabloid they have chosen tracks as diverse as Chris Bell’s I Am the Cosmos (”the only track I’ve ever stolen”), Lo Borges’ Aos Baroes (”will turn upside down a few lives”), Richie Valens’ In a Turkish Town, The Impressions‘ I’ve Been Trying (”the height of musical tenderness”), Roxy Music’s Pyjamarama, The 13th Floor Elevators’ I Had to Tell You, Dirty Projectors’ Rise Above, and Lou Reed Street Hassle (”the centre-piece of the compilation”).
Spanning over half a century from rock antiques to futuristic pop, it’s a must have for Phoenix fans, musical adventurers, Francophiles and time travellers alike.
