Sydney Three-Piece The Goods Team Up with The Delta Riggs for Silky New Jam 'Cassandra'

Sydney’s renowned soul-electronic trio The Goods (Badmandela, Rosario, Black Tree) have aligned with The Delta Riggs to serve up a seamlessly silky jam, ‘Cassandra’, ahead of The Goods’ forthcoming studio album ‘II’, slated for release in May this year.

Impossible to pin down to a single genre, ‘Cassandra’ is an era-bending soul record, sampled into a hip hop track, inflated by the velvety vocals of frontman Black Tree, and garnished with punchy rap verses by The Delta Riggs’ lead vocalist Elliott Hammond.

The Goods explain how the collab came about, “The beat for Cassandra came out of a series of sessions where we got together some crew and just set up a bunch of instruments, pressed record and jammed for hours. Later, with fresh ears, we went back in and cut loops out of our favourite bits; the idea was to play like we were on an old record and then sample ourselves. We sent it to Elliott to flesh out, he came into the studio with this crazy idea for a rap and laid it down in one take and we rebuilt the song from there around his verses.”

Deriving from a comedic experience, Hammond shares the story behind ‘Cassandra’, “A friend of mine had told me a story about some out there lady that gets protective about a bakery or something on Balaclava Rd. I thought that was awesome and was laughing to myself about it on the way to the studio. Then when we started writing I just kind of invented this character Mrs Cassandra...”

With their second studio album ‘II’ set to embody forward-thinking soul, boogie, house, live musicianship and dance-floor sensibilities, and collaborations with the likes of Touch Sensitive, The Delta Riggs, Disco J, plus more, The Goods “really wanted this next body of work to be more collaborative and to move the music in new directions.”

Heralded for their smashing live sets, The Goods have shared stages with the likes of Snarky Puppy, Oddisee and Onra, as well as various music festivals. To celebrate the release of ‘Cassandra’, The Goods have been invited to perform live at Golden Age Cinema’s Background Noise – a monthly series of intimate Q&A conversations and live sets from Australia’s best emerging and established musicians. This will take place ahead of their slot at Bad Friday Weekender in Marrickville, where they will be sharing a line-up with the likes of Pond, Holy Holy, Twin Peaks, Cosmo’s Midnight, Winston Surfshirt, plus stacks more.
