Grum is a Scottish electro producer from Leeds, England, who emerged to considerable fanfare in 2009 with the productions “Runaway” and “Heartbeats” and a bunch of remixes. Born Graeme Shepherd in Edinburgh, Scotland, he cites influences from the ’80s (Giorgio Moroder, the Human League, New Order) and the contemporary electro-pop scenes (Cut Copy, Daft Punk, Air), plus French house (Les Rythmes Digitales) and Italo disco (Kano). Grum released several remixes in 2008, but it wasn’t until 2009 that he first made a name for himself on the electro scene with a few productions of his own: “Runaway,” “Sound Reaction,” and “Heartbeats.“These tracks got airplay from some of the top radio DJs in the United Kingdom, including Radio 1 show hosts Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob da Bank, and Jaymo & Andy George. In addition to the Radio 1 airplay, Grum was an Internet favorite championed by the tastemaking blog Discodust and many others within the music blogosphere. Among these early productions, “Heartbeats” proved especially popular, showing up on several different Ministry of Sound mix albums. In the meantime, Grum released a bunch of remixes, most notably Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Goldfrapp’s “Rocket,” Passion Pit’s “To Kingdom Come,” and Friendly Fires’ “Skeleton Boy,” and began establishing himself as a DJ on the international club scene. Grum’s debut album, Heartbeats, included his big single as the title track, and was released by Ultra in 2010.

Scott Graeme Shepard is an obvious disciple of his fellow countrymen’s belief that fundamentally feet are there to be moved and brains to catch up later. He doesn’t exactly keep his powder dry either, opener ‘Through The Night’ loaded with Guetta-esque hooks and chugging retro synth vamps that’ll have you reaching for your shoulder pads and sinclair C5 keys. Oh, and let me take the opportunity to apologize on his behalf now; you’re going to have to be hanging with cool cats all summer to avoid having your bra in annexed by the album’s title track, it represents perfection of the form, right from the casio-plonking opening notes to its maddening addictive one word chorus.

Oh No Ono are set to kick off the new decade right with the wholly immersive, phantasmagorical pop bliss of Eggs. The Danish quintet – Aske Zidore (guitar, vocals), Malthe Fischer (vocals, guitar), Nis Svoldgaard (bass, vocals), Nicolai Koch (keyboards) and Kristoffer Rom (drums) – harness an epic, chiaroscuro psychedelia, forging it into dazzling gems of otherworldly pop brilliance. The burnished tunes belie an apocalyptic lyrical bent, the combination recalling an even more tripped-out MGMT, Flaming Lips or Caribou, liberally sprinkled with elements of George Harrison’s Beatles songs, Sparks and the lofty ambition of Kate Bush. With a formidable command of maximalist melodies that seemingly pulsate in 3D and cascade in waves of decadent pleasure, Oh No Ono are set to turn 2010 a baroque shade of day-glo.
Formed in 2003 in the mediaeval Danish city of Aalborg, and now resident in Copenhagen, Oh No Ono enjoy some celebrity as national pop stars. The national Danish Broadcasting Corporation awarded them ‘Breakthrough Of The Year’ and they were nominated for two Danish Music Awards, Best Band and Best Newcomer, while influential Danish magazine Soundvenue recently voted Eggs as the 5th best Danish album of the decade. Word of mouth from their European festival appearances over the past couple of years set the blogs alight.
Now with Eggs, their debut, Oh No Ono have the rest of the world in their sights. In love with the power of pop, their subversive thrill in pushing new ideas under the radar is highly contagious.
With a terrific visual aesthetic directed by the band and artist Malene Mathiasson, featuring a series of darkly sexual paintings that would make Hieronymous Bosch and Francis Bacon blush, their multi-layered, minutely detailed artwork will doubtless prompt much analysis.Unsurprisingly, the Kubrick-esque video clip – think The Shining with a bevy of romantically adventurous nurses – for first single ‘Swim’(directed by Adam Hashemi) hit number one on the Pitchfork video chart this last summer.
Eggs was recorded in a small country house on the Danish isle of Mon over a nine-month period, allowing the band to create a hermetically sealed universe where images, words and sounds collide in a united vision of a corrupted pop Babylon. The band interweave propulsive grooves with orchestral embellishment, layered harmonies, backwards loops and captured moments from their island environment, using some esoteric techniques. The sound of bird flocks taking flight is echoed by woodwind players. Percussion is played on a water-filled tub. Elephants trumpet. A massive choir of Oh No Ono’s friends sing-along with the organ in a 300-year-old church,where the group also recorded the (mostly self-arranged) string parts.
Displaying a pirate-lusty approach to songcraft, Oh No Ono dazzle with their ambition and the scale of their accomplishment. Gorge on the dystopian feast. From the cacophonic, sitar and clavichord-drenched miasma of childhood-nightmare ‘Eleanor Speaks’, and the drama and tension of ‘Swim’, the album immediately drags you under their spell. ‘Internet Warrior’ rockets towards the heart of the sun, showering everything in a pinwheel of melodic sparks amid a throbbing rhythmic undertow.
‘Icicles’ abounds in symphonic splendour, while detailing a horror story of a snowman-child abandoned by his mother who is slowly melting (we think). A massed choir heralds the shimmering underwater textures of ‘The Wave Ballet’, giving way to the ornately textured, galvanized pop and falsetto singalongs of ‘The Tea Party’. Eggs closes with a near-ten minute opus, ‘Beelitz’. If you needed any more convincing of the giant-slaying scale and wonderment within this band, ‘Beelitz’ will humble you into submission. “The song gets its name from a forsaken military hospital in Germany that we recorded in,” explains Nicolai. “It was used first by the Germans in World War II and later by the Soviet forces. We had to break in and it was really cold, but it had a lot of atmosphere and beautiful acoustics.”

Another brand new fine album from Kitsuné, full of inspiration from a child called ‘Yume’. Indeed here is officially the most snuggly, peaceful, motherly Kitsuné compilation until now – soft as cotton. In the midst of one of the worst winters Paris has known for a long time and with so many conflicts all around, there was a need to reach out for a calming and tender nature. As a result this new compilation brings you almost as much comfort as taking a newly born in your arms and giving him a cuddle.

A fully padded compilation that’s rather more candid, innocent and carefree than the norm, and which is still inviting the listener to shake his hips. The kindliness of a home (Maison) forever opened to all kinds of ideas. Suddenly a new transversal approach shapes up with this compilation attractive to ears of all ages. Rested, serene, more contemplative, with a selection that’s probably more geared at Sunday afternoon than Saturday night, more ‘yuzu green tea’ than stupid ‘alcopops’. Sure there are a few hysterical sirens in the Jupiter track, but It sure is something that you’ll have your ears glued to.

The Knife

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with
artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.
They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.

‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the
musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.

Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, future performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.

Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera. We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

Red has lost none of Fredrik Saroea and musical partner Ketil Mosnes’ aptitude for so-classic-you-must-haveheard- it-before hooks, but this follow-up is an altogether more concept-driven beast. For example, lead single Give it Up was actually an idea for a music video before it became a song, paraphrasing Beat It, Bad, West Side Story, and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo & Juliet.

As an album, Red is a thoroughly unashamed love-letter to the influences that made Datarock what they are today. DEVO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Talking Heads, Haruki Murakami, Don Delilo’s White Noise, Scott Walker, the works of John Hughes and Peter Greenaway, and even Molly Ringwald (in the song Molly) are all referenced. Pop cultural fluff that is meaningful because invoking them now as adults is a sharp reminder from a more innocent time that we should ALWAYS be having more fun than we are right now.

But Red is not all nostalgic longing. Datarock are just as interested in this day and age, expressed through their love-hate relationship with technology and communication. On The Pretender, Fredrik announces he is, “In love with my avatar!”, before reeling off a list of the multiple duplicitous identities available to him online – North Korean? South American? Presbyterian? The Blog, meanwhile, is an attempt by these technology-fetishists to romanticise the early utopian promise of the Internet, before it became something that people just took for granted and got annoyed by. It’s total retrofuturism.

Red isn’t just a socio-political tract about the fluid nature of identity in the Internet age. It’s also a eulogy for nostalgia. It’s an abstract notion in an era of instant data retrieval. And it’s the party album of 2009!

Jenny Wilson released her celebrated debut Love And Youth in 2005 with the hit singles Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward and Summertime, The Roughest Time. The album received several awards, including the P3 Guld award for Pop in 2005, and attracted extensive international attention leading to much appreciated tours of Scandinavia, Europe and Australia.

In 2006, after the birth of her second child, Wilson began plotting her sophomore release Hardships! Like her Scandanavian contemporaries Annie, Robyn, and Fever Ray, Wilson was wholly responsible for the sound of the album, recording and producing Hardships! in her own The Gold Medal Studio in Stockholm. Wilson also decided to launch her own label after releasing her debut on The Knife’s Rabid Records, so she established Gold Medal Recordings under exclusive licence to Playground Music.

With the iconic quirky pop sensibilities we grew to love on Love And Youth, Hardships! is a joyous, poignant and idiosyncratic collection of mature pop melodies.
