Our friends at the brand new UK label Dummy have generously put up a free-download of Lost Valentinos’ Midnights. Click here to download the two part track in all it’s glory, as well as a rework by hot-as-hell disco queens, Fan Death, and an incredible 14 minute marathon mix from Emperor Machine.

Dummy is run by Leo Silverman – he who signed the White Stripes to XL and broke The Vines and The Avalanches in the UK – and the label’s first release was The Golden Filter’s 24-carat single Solid Gold. Lost Valentinos will be playing the Dummy launch party in May, as well as UK club nights Yo Yo, White Heat, and the Clash Magazine party.

If you’re in Sydney this Friday (1 May) make sure you’re at the Serio Single Launch at The Annandale.

Fist of God

April 24, 2009 Posted by Nick at 6:25 pm

mstrkrft-fist-of-godMSTRKRFT are set to cross over with their genre crushing new MSTR-piece Fist of God.

Their 2006 debut, The Looks, established a genre-defying sound as appealing to clubs as it was to mosh pits.

I think we approach it differently because we’re not coming from a strictly dance background” says one half of the band, Jesse F. Keeler, whose former punk outfit, the now defunct Death from Above 1979, were produced by MSTRKRFT’s other half Al-P.

Now signed to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, MSTRKRFT’s indie-dance credentials are matched only by the ridiculously diverse list of artists that they’ve collaborated with and remixed. From Nine Inch Nails to Wolfmother to Usher to The Kills.

New album Fist of God, features John Legend, Ghostface Killah of the legendary Wu Tang Clan, Isis, Lil’ Mo, Freeway and more.

The first single, ode-to-hedonism Bounce featuring US rapper N.O.R.E. has brutally pounded dance-floors everywhere. And the best is yet to come.

Fist of God is out 24 April on etcetc.

Tracklisting:

1. It Ain’t Love (feat. Lil’ Mo)
2. 1000 Cigarettes
3. Bounce (feat. Nore & Isis)
4. Vuvuvu
5. Heartbreaker
6. Fist Of God
7. So Deep (feat. Jahmal of The Carps)
8. Click Click (feat. E-40)
9. Word Up (feat. Ghostface Killah)
10. Breakaway (feat. Jahmal of The Carps)
11. 1000 Cigarettes (feat. Freeway) (Bonus)

The Knife do Darwin…

April 22, 2009 Posted by Nick at 11:39 am

Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson has added yet another string to her already impressive bow.

Along with Danish performance collective, Hotel Pro Forma, Karin’s band The Knife have helped to create Tomorrow, in a Year – A Darwin Opera. No, it’s not a tribute to Australia’s youngest city. It’s an experimental performance piece featuring elements of electronica pop, classical opera and performance, commemorating the 150 year anniversary of Charles Darwin’s influential The Origin of Species. Premiering in Copenhagen in September, the production has no dates scheduled outside of Denmark as yet.

And as if that isn’t enough Euro-envy for our Fever Ray fans, may we direct you towards a few gushing live reviews from Fever Ray’s European dates.

Mission Control Supporting Ladytron this June

April 16, 2009 Posted by Nick at 11:47 am

LadytronV1.indd
etcetc’s very own Mission Control will be supporting Ladytron’s Brisbane and Melbourne shows in June.

Before Ladyhawke, before Lady Sovereign, and long before Lady Gaga, Ladytron were original catalysts in the rebirth of electro pop. Mission Control, meanwhile, have been busy recording their debut album, a follow up to their Innerspace EP which received plenty of love from Triple J, and their new single Silhouette can be heard there too if you ask nicely.

Being supported by Mission Control puts Ladytron in good company, with the boys having recently supported Bloc Party and The Mystery Jets, as well as opening the Sydney Festival.

Make sure you get tickets early – it won’t be the first time Ladytron have sold out in Australia!

Ladytron and Mission Control Dates:
5th June – Hifi, Melbourne – More Info
7th June – Hifi, Brisbane – More Info

…and if you want to see Mission Control sooner:
17th April -  Spectrum, Sydney
18th April -  Revolver, Melbourne
1st May -  FANS club, Brisbane

New Datarock Video for ‘Give it Up’.

April 14, 2009 Posted by Nick at 6:39 pm

So you think “So You Think You Can Dance?” can dance?

Well, it’s got nothing on the new Datarock video for Give it Up.

Give it Up

Featuring dance moves so hot they turned the band’s tracksuits red, the video is a slice of Beat It with a sprinkle of West Side Story.

It’s taken from their new album Red, out 12 June. If you’re a fan of the band, or just of the colour red, make sure you request them on Triple J’s Super Request.

Kitsuné Tabloid mixed by Phoenix

April 6, 2009 Posted by Nick at 6:49 pm

picture-261“As teenagers we would be excited to read bands’ playlists…So we’ve really taken to heart doing this compilation for Kitsune…Today you can get anything you like but way back it could take up to three years to lay your hands on a rare track.”Laurent Brancowitz

Kitsuné have given free reins to the boys from Phoenix for an unlikely yet amazing compilation of rare tracks that have changed their lives. Following in the footsteps of Digitalism, Phoenix’s Thomas Mars and Laurent Brancowitz carefully selected 18 tracks to make this the most sentimental and melodic record ever released on Kitsuné (better known for its electro-oriented Kitsuné Maison compilation and for artists like Digitalism, Cazals and autoKratz).

One of the most important French bands of recent times, Phoenix have gathered, in their own words, “little treasures that have had this huge impact and amazed us”. Known for three original albums of flawless indie-pop concotions that include the hits If I Ever Feel Better, Too Young, Everything is Everything, Run Run Run, Long Distance Call and Napoleon Says, their songs were also featured on the iconic Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette soundtracks.

For Tabloid they have chosen tracks as diverse as Chris Bell’s I Am the Cosmos (“the only track I’ve ever stolen”), Lo Borges’ Aos Baroes (“will turn upside down a few lives”), Richie Valens’ In a Turkish TownThe Impressions‘ I’ve Been Trying (“the height of musical tenderness”), Roxy Music’s PyjamaramaThe 13th Floor Elevators’ I Had to Tell You, Dirty Projectors’ Rise Above, and Lou Reed Street Hassle (“the centre-piece of the compilation”).

Spanning over half a century from rock antiques to futuristic pop, it’s a must have for Phoenix fans, musical adventurers, Francophiles and time travellers alike.

Tracklisting:

  1. Kiss – Love Theme From Kiss
  2. Dirty Projectors – Rise Above
  3. The Red Crayola – Victory Garden
  4. The Impressions – I’ve Been Trying
  5. Chris Bell – I Am The Cosmos
  6. Roxy Music – Pyjamarama
  7. The 13th Floor Elevators – I Had To Tell You
  8. Elvis Costello & The Attractions – Shipbuilding
  9. D’Angelo – Send It On
  10. Tangerine Dream – Love On A Real Train
  11. Urge Overkill – Stull (Part 1)
  12. Lô Borges – Aos Barões
  13. Iggy Pop & James Williamson – Master Charge
  14. Dennis Wilson – Lady (Falling in Love)
  15. Irma Thomas – It’s Raining
  16. Ritchie Valens – In A Turkish Town
  17. Dusty Springfield – I Think It’s Gonna Rain Today
  18. Lou Reed – Street Hassle
